Is Murrow right for you? Murrow has a diverse student body and a variety of excellent academic programs, but it is known primarily for its theater program which has been endorsed by Mel Brooks. It has students of all levels, from high-achieving to special needs. Students have the option to take specialized courses, like forensic science, yoga, and magical realism. Murrow also offers OPTA (optional time activities) for students to pursue independent studies, tutor, have lunch, or just unwind. They also feature a strong arts program and a unique grading system ranging from MI (mastery) to U (unsatisfactory).

What we know: There are seven separate admissions programs:
Communication Arts (General Admission)
Bilingual Chinese (if your home language in Chinese)
Bilingual Spanish (if you home language is Spanish)
Fine and Visual Arts
Admission to the communication arts (general) program is determined by a lottery system, although only if students list Murrow as their first choice and only if the student is a resident of Brooklyn. For each of the arts programs, admissions is contingent on a successful audition in conjunction with a review of the student’s English, Math, Social Studies, and Science grades as well as attendance and behavior.
Auditions are only open to Brooklyn residents. Admissions gives preference to “residents in Brooklyn Area A (beginning at the intersection of Bedford Avenue and LIRR to Avenue P to Coney Island Avenue, to Avenue K, to East 16th Street, to Avenue J, to East 15th Street to LIRR, to point of origin) b. Then to residents in Brooklyn Area B c. Then to Brooklyn students or residents.”
Note: The application process is open to both 8th graders and 9thgraders looking to enter Murrow.
